Meet Kurtis—Your Neighbor and Attorney
Kurtis Sunset is the founding attorney of Sunset Elder Law, where he focuses on Medicaid planning, estate planning, veterans benefits, and probate for families across Owensboro and Western Kentucky. He earned his law degree from Emory University School of Law and has spent nearly a decade helping Kentucky families plan with confidence.
He lives in Daviess County and believes good legal help should feel clear, approachable, and human. Families should not need a fancy suit or a translator to understand what happens next.

Sunset Elder Law is a family business and you are treated like family when you are at their home away from home.”

Common Questions
At Sunset Elder Law we believe in providing straight-forward answers to the questions families ask us most. If your question isn’t here, we’re happy to talk it through during a free consultation.
Now—not when you're older or ill. Estate planning is simply making your wishes clear while you're healthy and clear-minded. Even a basic will, power of attorney, and living will spare your family confusion and cost later. Most plans take just one or two visits.
Maybe—and even if you're over the limits today, planning can often get you there. In Kentucky (2026), a single applicant generally needs assets under $2,000 and income under $2,982/month for long-term-care Medicaid. The rules are complex, but options exist. A free consultation is the fastest way to know.
Most families start with a will, powers of attorney, and a healthcare directive. A trust is worth considering if you want to avoid probate, own property in more than one state, or plan for a loved one with special needs. We'll tell you honestly which one fits—not sell you the bigger package.
It depends on the size of the estate and whether there's a valid will. In Kentucky, costs include court filing fees plus attorney fees, which we quote as a flat fee and always lay out the costs up front. A solid estate plan can reduce or avoid probate entirely.
It's a tax-free monthly pension add-on for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities. In 2026 it pays up to about $2,874/month for a married veteran. It can help cover care at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility.
