Meet Our Team

Kurtis Sunset

Principal Attorney & Owner
Sunset Elder Law PLLC

Kurtis is an elder law attorney who has focused on helping older adults and their families for nearly a decade. As founding attorney of Sunset Elder Law, he concentrates on Medicaid planning, estate planning, probate, and veterans' benefits for families in Owensboro, Daviess County, and Western Kentucky.

In addition to his deep knowledge of elder law, Kurtis brings a strong background in real estate, which helps him protect clients’ homes and savings when planning for long‑term care. This mix of legal and real‑estate experience is especially valuable when families are trying to avoid losing the house to nursing home costs.

Kurtis earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Louisville, where he served as Student Body President and as a member of the Board of Trustees from 2011–2012. He was also selected for the McConnell Scholar Program, a respected, non‑partisan political leadership program founded by Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell. After college, he earned his law degree (Doctor of Law) from Emory University School of Law.

Kurtis is active in the elder‑law community statewide. He serves as Secretary of the Kentucky chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and as Vice President of the Kentucky Bar Association’s Elder Law Section, helping shape education, policy, and best practices for Kentucky elder law attorneys.

Kurtis lives in Daviess County and is an avid tennis player, writer, and reader. He founded Sunset Elder Law so families in Western Kentucky could get clear, compassionate guidance in plain language as they make decisions about Medicaid planning, asset protection trusts, estate planning, probate, and veterans' benefits.

Born and raised in Owensboro, Kayla Hillard brings a strong mix of business training and hands‑on caregiving experience to Sunset Elder Law. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Supply Chain Management from Eastern Kentucky University, where she was a member of Tau Sigma Honor Society and graduated magna cum laude.

Grace Frizzell

Grace Frizzell, Administrative Assistant

Administrative Assistant

Grace has served as the Administrative Assistant at Sunset Elder Law since the firm first opened its doors in Owensboro. She brings a rare blend of professional experience, lifelong learning, and a deep commitment to serving older adults and their families in Western Kentucky.

After dedicating 26 years to raising her family as a homemaker and mother, Grace returned to school at Brescia University with determination and purpose. She earned two associate degrees, a bachelor’s degree in social work, and a degree in marine technology, reflecting her passion for personal growth and achievement. Her social work training gives her a strong foundation in listening, empathy, and supporting people through major life transitions—skills that align closely with elder law and estate planning.

Grace is the proud mother of three sons and grandmother to six grandchildren. Following her years of family caregiving, she spent nearly a decade working as a cook on towboats, enjoying the close‑knit camaraderie of her “boat family” during 28‑day rotations on the river. The extended time off between trips allowed her to build meaningful memories with her loved ones, which informs the way she relates to the families Sunset Elder Law serves today.

At Sunset Elder Law, Grace’s warmth, dedication, and life experience help create a calm, welcoming environment for clients who may be nervous about Medicaid planning, probate, veterans' benefits, or estate planning. She greets visitors, answers calls, and helps coordinate paperwork so families always feel seen, heard, and cared for from the moment they walk in the door.

In her free time, Grace enjoys spending time with family and friends and appreciating the beauty of God’s creation through nature and the outdoors.
