Basic Estate Planning

Estate planning isn’t just for the wealthy. It’s how you make your wishes clear and spare your family stress and guesswork later. We prepare your documents in plain language — often in a single visit.

Seated on her grandfather's lap in a tractor cab, a curly-haired little girl grips the steering wheel and waves while he smiles beside her in a straw hat. An estate plan helps families pass the farm, and moments like this one, to the next generation.

Common Questions

What is Estate Planning?

Estate planning means deciding ahead of time who handles your affairs and who receives what you leave behind. Your "estate" is simply everything you own—your home, your accounts, your belongings. A good plan puts your choices in writing so your family doesn't have to guess during a hard time.

What documents do I need?

Most families are covered by four documents:

  • A will—says who receives your things and who's in charge.
  • A durable power of attorney—names someone to handle your money if you can't. ("Durable" means it stays in effect even if you become too ill to decide.)
  • A living will—spells out the medical care you do and don't want.
  • A healthcare surrogate—names someone to make medical choices for you.
Do I need a will or a trust?

For most people, a will is enough to start. A trust costs a little more up front but can avoid probate (the court process after a death), keep your affairs private, and help if you own property in another state or care for a loved one with special needs. We'll give you an honest answer about which one fits—won't push the bigger package.

What happens if I don't have a plan?

If you pass without a will, Kentucky law decides who gets your property—not you. This is called dying "intestate." The process is often slower, more public, and more stressful for your family. A simple plan now prevents most of that. (KRS Chapter 391 & Chapter 392 - Dower & Curtesy Rules)
