Medicaid Planning

A nursing home in Kentucky often costs around $7,500 a month — and many families can’t pay that for long. We help you qualify for Medicaid so your care gets covered, while keeping as much of your home and savings as the law allows. We explain every step in plain words, and we handle the paperwork for you.

Three young grandchildren sing and laugh on a wooden porch swing while their grandfather strums an acoustic guitar beside them. Medicaid planning helps older adults pay for long-term care while protecting the savings they built for their families.

Common Questions

What is Medicaid Planning?

Medicaid planning is the work of getting you ready to qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is a government program that helps pay for long-term care, like a nursing home, when your savings run low. The rules are strict and easy to get wrong, so we build the plan, prepare the forms, and file the application for you.

Does Medicaid pay for a nursing home?

Yes. For most families, Medicaid is what actually pays for a long nursing home stay. Medicare (the health coverage you get at 65) does not — it only covers short visits after a hospital stay. Kentucky Medicaid can also help pay for care at home through a program called the Home and Community Based Waiver.

What is the five-year look-back?

When you apply, Kentucky looks at the last five years (60 months) of your finances. If you gave money or property away during that time, it can delay when your coverage starts. This is called the "look-back period." It's not a reason to panic — it's the reason to plan early. And even if care is needed right now, there are still legal ways to help.

Can you help if care is needed right now?

Yes. This is called crisis planning, and it is never too late to call. If a loved one is already in a nursing home or about to enter one, we move fast to organize the finances and file the application. Families who plan ahead keep more — but families who call late still have real options.
